General goal of the game

In the game of volleyball, there are two teams competing against each other to score the most points. There is one team on each side of the net. Through a series of rallies (transferring the ball from one side of the net to the other), each team uses different methods to pass, set and hit the ball across the net with the goal to make the ball land on the floor of the other teams side of the court. Once this is achieved, the team receives a point.

Game, set, match!

From start to finish, volleyball is called a “match.” Within a match there are 3 or 5 “games” or “sets.” Younger ages often play 3 sets in a match, but most varsity high school games as well as college play 5 sets in a match.
